Topic for the 7/8/12 #storyappchat: Bookstore Apps vs. Standalone Story Apps

#storyappchat topic badgeIn this brave new world of publishing and creativity, there are an ever-increasing number of options for getting your work in front of a larger audience. Here at #storyappchat we do a lot of talking about getting a story idea made into an app or ebook, but there are other choices to consider as well. For instance, the App Store has a number of bookshelf apps that accept submissions. A few of these include:

MeeGenius

Demibooks Storytime

Interactive Touch Books

PlayTales (formerly TouchyBooks)

MeMeTales

Ruckus Reader

Okenko Books

MagicBlox

As far as I know, all these storefront apps are accepting submissions of your next great storybook idea. Each company has their own revenue share system, and there are some definite advantages to working with them—your story might reach more readers if there’s an established company (with an already-downloaded app) behind it. But if you’ve got your heart set on your own app icon, leading to your story and nothing else, this may not be the option for you.

Let’s get together this Sunday, July 8 to discuss the pros and cons of both bookstore apps and standalone story apps. We’ll kick things off at 9:00 p.m. Eastern/6:00 p.m. Pacific time–so make plans to stop by!

Chat Transcript: 5/22/11

Thanks to all who stopped by last night’s inaugural #storyappchat! We had some real nuggets of wisdom come out of our first Twitter party, including:

@RuckusMedia: Sound and animation are key, too, in bringing a storybook to the digital space

@A4CWSN: I believe that what children remember is a good story, imagination is the most important thing, for my children at least

@MissMelodyKitty: I like books with more interactivity, but must be easy to navigate or kids lose interest quickly

Here’s a PDF transcript of the chat:

Thanks again to Ruckus Media, who generously gave two fab apps away last night to @matusic and @lovinmomma8. And if you missed yesterday’s chat, plan on joining us THIS Sunday at 9. Topic: Finding out about storybook apps–how do you know when a great new story has been released?
