Several months ago, I noticed a strange tweet in my Twitter feed and feared my account had been hacked. Upon further scrutiny, I discovered that one of the apps my 5-year-old daughter had been playing with that morning sent the tweet on her behalf.
Guess which app got deleted?
This scenario only scratches the surface on the big issue of app privacy. We’re all concerned as consumers about the information our apps collect about us, and how that data can be used. As developers of software for kids, we should be very concerned about recent investigations by the FTC, and how we can be sensitive to this issue both to remain compliant with current and future laws, and more importantly, how to keep from annoying or harming our audience.
Let’s chat about privacy tomorrow night, April 15 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern/6:00 p.m. Pacific. Just use the #storyappchat hashtag, and join us on Twitter. We look forward to seeing you then!
